The daughter of two horticulturists who operated a hibiscus and tropical fruit nursery, Maxy grew up in the mountains of Puerto Rico with a love of nature ingrained in her DNA. From a young age she developed a passion for beach culture, collecting Surfer Magazines and bathing suit clippings from Hola and Vogue. In her early teenage years she swam and played water polo for the Puerto Rico Swim Federation and competed in local Body Boarding contests. As soon as she got her driver's license she bought a surfboard and taught herself how to surf. She quickly became friends with the locals who encouraged her to join the Surfrider Foundation, where she became an advocate for environmental protection.
Maxy started her undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico where she majored in Biology and worked as a lifeguard at the campus pool. To earn extra money she sold dipped dyed t-shirts and hand sewn clothes which inspired her to pursue a career in fashion. She moved from the small town of Mayagüez to San Francisco, California where she attended the Academy of Art University. There she met her mentor, Ninz Sangha (designer for Spyder, Burton, Pony, amongst other leading sports brands), who guided her active-apparel focused MFA degree.
In the Fall of 2008 Maxy moved to NYC where she interned for the streetwear brand 555 Soul. In January 2009 she landed her first job at Hawke and Co Outfitters and helped launch their eponymous golf line. She then received an offer to work for Avia Women's Performance Apparel where she flourished and evolved as a designer. From there she has continued to nurture her passion for sports and nature by working with multiple active and outdoor brands.
Maxy currently lives in Brooklyn, where she dreams of sandy beaches and warm ocean water.
